Stuart Pearce believes West Ham should sign former Chelsea striker Diego Costa.
The former Hammers defender and coach says the Spaniard is a ‘different animal’ to recently-departed Marko Arnautovic and landing him would take the club to the next level.
Costa has been linked with a return to the Premier League after his below-par spell back at Atletico Madrid.
The 30-year-old has scored just five league goals since leaving Chelsea in January 2018, and was hit with an eight-match ban in April for abusing a referee.
Pearce says the impish frontman ‘would be a great asset for any club in the Premier League’, but believes he could make a huge impact at the London Stadium.
LATEST TRANSFER GOSSIP
“I would snap him up,” said Pearce on Monday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.
“He would be a great asset for any club in the Premier League, maybe aside from the top two – but then I still think he could do a job there.
“I’ve been a great fan of his. He was incredible at Chelsea and he leads the line brilliantly.
“If West Ham got their hands on him, or Everton, it would put them into a different category of expectation.
“Costa and Arnautovic are chalk and cheese, I think Costa is a far better player.
“Arnie has only really come on the scene since Moyesy shoved him up front and turned him into a centre forward, and he is still striving for consistency and a slightly better finish, I think.
“Costa is a different animal altogether. He holds it up really well and has a great scoring record.
“People don’t want to play against him.”
