Marko Arnautovic: West Ham are ‘doing the best thing’ by selling ‘nightmare’ forward to Shanghai SIPG, says Kevin Nolan

Marko Arnautovic is a ‘nightmare player’ and West Ham are ‘doing the best thing ever’ by selling him to the Chinese Super League, believes former Hammers captain Kevin Nolan.

It is understood the Austrian is having a medical in London ahead of a move to Shanghai SIPG, having told the club he wanted to quit the London Stadium earlier this week.

Arnautovic was close to leaving West Ham in January, but the club rejected a £35million offer from a club in China and he ended up signing a new four-year contract worth a bumper £100,000-a-week.

Arnautovic has had his head turned by the big-money wages on offer in China

However, six months after penning that deal he has asked to leave again, and this time West Ham are willing to cash-in, although for a cheaper price of around £22.4m.

And, despite the lower fee, Nolan insists his former club are making the right call.

“As a former skipper I think he’d be a bit of a nightmare to handle,” the ex-midfielder told talkSPORT on Friday’s Sports Breakfast.

“When I’ve spoken to Nobes [Mark Noble] he says how much of a great lad he is.

“But from what I’ve heard of him, in the dressing room when it’s not going his way he shows it and lets everyone know. He wants it his own way and if he doesn’t get it he spits the dummy out of the pram.

“I think West Ham are doing the best thing ever in getting him out of the club, moving on and getting the money for him.

“There was a lot of this stuff going on when he moved from Stoke to West Ham, and he’s done it again.

“This time he wants to go to China and obviously it’s all money motivated, why else would you want to leave the Premier League for the Chinese league?

“If he left in January, I think he would have been fondly remembered by fans, but now he’ll probably be remembered for being greedy and just wanting money.

“It’s unfortunate, because he’s had a fantastic time at West Ham.”
