Dean Smith confirms Aston Villa’s January transfer plans, says club are looking at ‘number of players’

Aston Villa have already started planning for the January transfer window, manager Dean Smith has confirmed.

Smith was appointed the club’s manager in October, and he’s set to enter his first transfer window as boss when it reopens in just under two months.

Smith is nearing his one-month anniversary of being appointed Villa manager

He will finally be able to tinker with the squad inherited from predecessor Steve Bruce, and Smith is expected to be backed by Villa’s owners – though Financial Fair Play regulations may hamper the club’s plans.

The Birmingham Mail say Villa are primarily hoping to strengthen the central defensive position, and they have been linked with a loan swoop for Chelsea’s highly-rated teenager Ethan Ampadu, who can play in midfield as well as at centre-half.

However, it appears bringing in just one defender is not Smith’s plan, with the manager confirming he and his staff will be looking for a ‘number of players’ in January.

“We are going to be looking in the January market for a number of players,” Smith has said.

“Between myself, Suso (sporting director) and Christian (Purslow, chief executive) we have got our heads together and come up with a plan.

“We will be having further recruitment meetings in the next week or two.

Ethan Ampadu is reported to be a target of Villa’s

“You have to plan. You can’t get to January 1 and think ‘right, what are we going to do now?’

“There is a lot of planning going into it and a big part of what Suso has been involved in so far.

“Myself, John (Terry) and Richard (O’Kelly) sat down with Suso the other day and have all put in some good ideas. We will move forward on that.”
