Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock rules out move for Chelsea legend John Terry

Neil Warnock has ruled out Cardiff moving for John Terry, the former Chelsea defender, who is currently on the lookout for a new club.

Terry has been a free agent since leaving Aston Villa at the end of last season, and it appeared he was to join Spartak Moscow on a one-year deal earlier this month.

The veteran defender left Aston Villa at the end of last season after they failed to win promotion to the Premier League

However, the 37-year-old announced on Wednesday he has turned down Spartak’s offer ‘after assessing this move with my family’, meaning he remains on the market.

Steve Bruce, the Aston Villa manager, wants to bring the former England and Chelsea captain back to Villa Park just a few months after he left. Terry played 36 times for Bruce’s side last season and helped them reach the Championship play-off final, though they were defeated in the Wembley showpiece by Fulham.

It has been widely reported that Terry has multiple offers to continue his playing career, with suggestions that a Premier League return could even be on the cards.

However, Cardiff will not be the club signing Terry, with Warnock joining talkSPORT on Thursday morning to rule out a move for the veteran centre-half.

“I think it would depend on the team,” Warnock told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast when asked about Terry’s future. “I don’t think for us it would be the situation as we’ve got to have a lot more energy really.

“He has got that class though hasn’t he; he did well at Villa last year.

Cardiff have started the season brightly, though they remain without a win

“But I think if he is going to play again it would be something like a Villa, if I’m honest.

“But he’s still got a lot to offer.

“There are not many left for managers of those leaders on the pitch. I’m lucky I’ve got three or four in the squad I’ve got. Managers dream of having a leader or two don’t they?”
